2 Hours in Austin

Clearly not enough time but great for a first impression. We got an idea of what the city has to offer when we had the chance to spend 2 hours in Austin in May 2022. It reminded us of Berlin, Germany in many ways. So for me, I felt home right away. Here is what we did…

Muont Bonnel

Mount Bonnel is a great start for your adventure. You can enjoy the gorgeous view and get a feeling for the city. It is located in Covert Park and is considered the highest point in Austin (785 feet). The trail is free and there is free parking. To get to the top you’re required to climb about 100 steps. You’ll find a beautiful viewing deck and several picnic areas where you can relax and enjoy the views. I definitely recommend carrying some water on hot summer days.

Greetings from Austin Mural

I love a good vintage postcard mural. This is something I’ve never seen outside of Texas before. It is super fun to take a picture and send it to the loved ones at home. It’s almost like sending an actual postcard. Of course this is also one of the most popular murals in the city and a touristy hotspot. So be prepared to stand in line for a couple of minutes (It actually wasn’t that bad). But that’s great because there’s always someone there to take your picture 😊.

Location: 1720 S 1st St

Drive through famous streets

South Congress Ave: You can find lots of restaurants and vintage shops here. We stopped for a cold drink and a taco at Jo’s Coffee. They do have gluten-free options available, but they sell fast. Very close is a shop that was recommended to us by friends Neighborhood Goods. It is a clothing store that also sells books, beauty products and some food items.

Sixth Street: Home to beautiful historic buildings, restaurants and bars. This street is especially fun during nighttime because there is lot’s of entertainment options.

Visit the Texas State Capitol

This historic landmark is a must see on the trip. They offer free guided tours through the building which we’ll definitely do next time we’re in town. Check the Capitol’s website for opening hours and more information on how to best plan your trip. We just walked around the park this time which was also very beautiful.

One last coffee stop

Before we headed back to Houston we stopped at Greater Goods Coffee Co where we enjoyed the most delicious drinks. We had a vanilla latte and a turmeric chai latte which looked absolutely beautiful. This is the place to be and a wonderful finale to our short trip.

I hope I could give you some ideas on how to spend 2 hours in Austin. We will definitely be back. It was amazing.

Here is another fun day trip in Texas
